Special education credential

December 22, 2011—The University of Redlands has announced a new Special Education Teacher Credential whose courses will start in January 2012 at the Redlands campus.

The new Special Education Teacher Credential features a program that concentrates in mild to moderate disabilities, which will be particularly attractive to educators who have single or multiple-subject credentials. This program is accredited by WASC and by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC.)

According to Adam Lipson, director of admissions, the Special Education credential in Mild/Moderate Disabilities authorizes the provision of services to individuals in grades P through 12. “Our credential will also prepare our candidates to be adept to teach children with autism,” added Lipson.

James Valadez, dean of the University of Redlands School of Education, which offers the new credential, said that teachers and would-be teachers should not think of themselves as bound by the challenges brought about by the state’s continued financial woes.

“If you you’re looking for a teaching position, think about enhancing your specialization,” Valadez said. “Having a Special Education credential will increase your opportunities in the job market.”

“School districts in the Inland Empire continue to have shortages of well-prepared special education teachers, despite the budget shortfalls,” said Dr. Susan Porter, assistant professor of Special Education. “We anticipate that there will be dozens of openings for Special Education teachers in this area next fall. The new credential program addresses a regional need, which is core to the mission and vision of the University. The new Special Education program also aligns with the social justice mission of the School of Education at the University of Redlands.”
