Piano students Christmas concert

At 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, Dec. 10, twelve piano students from the studio of University of Redlands Professor Louanne Long will present their annual “Nutcracker Extravaganza,” a special evening of piano ensemble music. Joining the college students this year are five high school students from the University of Redlands Summer Piano Camp 2011: Brian and Christopher Chan, Hannah and Esther Yaghoubian, Olivia Fontes, and Emily Hoyt, representing the piano studios of Angelica Prodan of Redlands, James McCormick of Palm Desert, and Susan McConnell of Riverside.

The focal point of the concert is Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker Suite Opus 71a" arranged for two performers at one piano or four performers at two pianos. Creating fun for the audience and performers alike will be various extra-musical effects, in particular the costumes designed to reflect the character of each dance.

Also on the program is the “March” from Rachmaninoff’s "Suite No. 2 Opus 17 for Two Pianos," performed by Michael Malakouti and Sophie Tait. Joyce Grill’s “Three’s a Crowd Rag” will be performed by Sophia Ohanian, Leah Oubre and John Morin. Noah Yaghoubian of Desert Hot Springs will join his two sisters, Esther and Hannah, in a six-hand rendition of Khachaturian’s "Sabre Dance." Concluding the recital, Austin Turner and Lara Urrutia will perform the rousing first movement of Prokofiev’s "Piano Concerto No. 3."
