Dr. Anne Ruggles Gere will be “Unleashing the Power of Writing” at the innovative Summer Institute—Leadership for Educational Justice
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2016 in Orton Center at the University of Redlands.
Gere, the institute’s keynote speaker, is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Gertrude Buck Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan, where she chairs the Joint Ph.D. in English and education and directs the Sweetland Center for Writing. Her talk will set the tone for this year’s institute agenda, “Writing as a Communicative, Creative and Transformative Thinking Process.”
“The most current and challenging topic in education was established as the theme this year,” says Jose Lalas, director of the Center for Educational Justice in the University’s School of Education. “The keynote as well as the concurrent sessions will present writing as a creative and transformative process across the K-16 curriculum. It will also emphasize audience participation, interaction, and conversation about literacy and the role of writing.”
The institute will include a superintendents’ forum for current district leaders to discuss local control accountability plan (LCAP) and the place of literacy and writing in this plan. Current research in writing, writing instruction and writing assessments will be shared.
“The goal of the Institute has been in my view to bring together educators with national experts to engage them in foundational contemporary educational concerns, this year is no different,” says Andrew Wall, dean of the School of Education at the University. “This year we have a national leader on writing working with us to reconsider the role that writing has in all aspects of education. There is much critique of the writing of students, as so we are challenged to consider how to transform student writing as a component of all standards-based education.”
