Department of Counseling and Human Services

The department houses three graduate programs in counseling (School Counseling; Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Counseling and Psychotherapy).

Guided by the ideals of equity and access, the School of Education's Department of Counseling and Human Services prepares students to provide socioculturally adaptive and responsive services in educational, non-profit, and government settings.

The Department houses a credential program, two on-campus master's degree programs in counseling - School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling - and a Counseling and Psychotherapy program offered in Wuhan, China. These programs challenge students to think critically about social justice issues, applying concepts of diversity and multiculturalism to problem-solving.

Grounded in Skill-Building Core Courses

Each program in the Department of Counseling and Human Services is based on a foundation of four common graduate courses. These core courses provide the foundational knowledge and skills needed to perform graduate-level research, assessment, evaluation, and writing. They also provide insight into the curriculum and program development, personal and professional reflection, and pluralism.

Each degree and credential program has additional specific requirements beyond the core courses that allow you to further specialize in your professional area of interest.

Pupil Personnel Services Credential Program

Our Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential program is intended for students who already have a master’s degree and are seeking to transition into a career in school counseling. With this credential, graduates are able to develop, implement, and evaluate a school counseling program that includes academic, career, personal, and social development.

Counseling Master’s Degrees

The Counseling master’s degrees are transformative programs that prepare students to become professionals who enhance the livelihoods of people in complex contexts. The degree programs aim to advance a more just society.

The Master of Arts in Education: School Counseling trains aspiring school counselors who support personal, academic, and social growth in educational settings while the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares students for the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) licensure.
