Bulldog Bench 2014

Bulldog Bench

The annual Bulldog Bench Golf Tournament will celebrate 25 years on Monday, May 12, at the historic Redlands Country Club. In honor of the single largest gift to the Bulldog Bench and Bulldog Athletics, the event has been renamed the Edwin B. Hales Bulldog Bench Golf Classic. All proceeds will benefit Bulldog teams.

Hales ’63 arrived at the University of Redlands in 1957 and attended the school for one year before leaving for two years of military service in the U.S. Army. He returned in 1960 to become a standout in the Bulldog football program during the next three seasons. He graduated with a degree in economics, and went on to enjoy a career as an attorney. He pursued his passions of bull fighting, sailing, auto racing, and spending time with his friends and family.

His student-athlete experience at Redlands meant a great deal to him, and inspired him to leave a significant and impactful gift from his stock portfolio to the Bulldog Bench. It was announced at last year's tournament that the event would now be named the Edwin B. Hales Bulldog Bench Golf Classic.

"Adding Eddie's name to the tournament allows us to not only recognize his generosity but also bring focus to a great example of philanthropy that helps to make the Bulldog student-athlete experience what it is today," Director of Athletics Jeff Martinez commented. "We look forward to celebrating the Silver Anniversary of this event on May 12."

During this year's tournament, participants will enjoy an informational and entertaining clinic by 11-time winner on the PGA Tour, Dave Stockton, who has been instrumental with the Bulldog Bench's success since 1997. Play will start at noon, and an on-the-course barbecue lunch adds to the festive and fun environment. Tournament awards, door prize drawing, and a live auction will take place during the dinner program, which concludes no later than 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $275, which includes green fees, cart, tee-prize package, foursome photo, door-prize ticket, clinic, barbecue lunch and buffet dinner. To attend the evening program only, which includes dinner, auction, and awards, the cost is $75 per person.

Supporters of the tournament may donate a door prize or auction item, or serve as a sponsor. Sponsorship levels include $300, $1,250, $2,500, $5,000 and more. For additional information or for sponsorship opportunities, please call the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at 909-748-8400.
