The University of Redlands will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert, community service projects, and more on Jan. 19 and 20, 2014.

“Part of our responsibility to students as an educational institution is to connect knowledge, history and wisdom to the world we live in,” Chaplain John Walsh said. “By retelling the MLK story, we help a whole new generation of people to see the value in his life and ideas. He wasn’t just another historical character.”

Sunday’s event, free and open to the public:

  • Inspiravi concert
    Location: Memorial Chapel
    Time: 7:30 p.m.
    Information: Los Angeles-based professional chamber choir Inspiravi will perform gospel and spiritual music.

     

    Monday’s events, free and open to the public:

  • “Got MLK” Milk Drive
    Location: Hunsaker Plaza
    Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Information: Participants can make monetary contributions (and students can contribute debit dollars) in order for the Blessing Center and Family Service Association of Redlands to buy milk for local homeless and hungry families.

     

  • “Get on the Bus” Letter Writing Kits
    Location: Hunsaker Plaza
    Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Information: Participants will package stationary items for children of incarcerated parents who are rehabilitating to encourage family and youth development programming.

     

  • Coat Drive Rack Renewal
    Location: Basketball courts
    Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Information: Participants will paint the coat racks that are used during the annual coat drive that benefits local homeless individuals and families.

     

  • Planter Box Build
    Location: Basketball courts
    Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Information: Participants will build transportable boxes that will be used to encourage sustainability and gardening among local youth programs.

     

  • “Making Our Dreams Come True” Luminaire
    Location: Hunsaker Plaza/Fountain
    Time: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
    Information: Participants will fill and design bags with drawings or writing on how they will play a role in helping the dreams of our community be fulfilled. Bags will be on display throughout the evening in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and legacies of service to the community.
