Eve Ensler to Speak
Tony Award-winning playwright, performer, author and activist Eve Ensler will speak in the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.
Ensler is the playwright behind “The Vagina Monologues,” which has been translated into more than 48 languages and performed in over 140 countries. According to Leela MadhavaRau, associate dean for Campus Diversity and Inclusion, Megan Welles ’14 decided during her sophomore year that she would like to have Ensler speak at Redlands during her last semester. Ensler brings together various elements of Welles’ Johnston emphasis – activism, discussion of often taboo subjects and women’s empowerment.
“We have been presenting Eve Ensler’s ‘The Vagina Monologues’ for over a decade on this campus,” MadhavaRau said. “Eve’s passion for ending violence against women and girls led to the creation of the global movement, V-Day, which has raised billions of dollars through performances of ‘The Vagina Monologues.’ Eve’s vision of a planet on which women and girls will be free to thrive, rather than merely survive, resonates deeply with me. I am so glad that one of our senior Johnston students, Megan Welles, made Eve’s appearance the foundation for her senior project.”
Each student and faculty and staff member will be allocated one free ticket to Ensler’s speech. Tickets will be available through Campus Events, $15 for non-University of Redlands students and $25 for all others. There will also be a special reception at 5 p.m. before the lecture, and a limited number of tickets to the reception will be available to the general public for $100 (includes admission to the lecture).
The University of Redlands will also present three performances of “The Vagina Monologues,” with English performances at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 and a Spanish production at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. All performances will take place in the Glenn Wallichs Theatre. Tickets are $5 for University of Redlands students and $10 for all others.
Campus Events can be reached at 909-748-8116.
