Giving Tuesday 2013
After Black Friday and Cyber Monday there’s now Giving Tuesday, a national day focused on philanthropy.
On Dec. 3, the University of Redlands will mark the occasion by educating the campus community about what it means to give back while raising funds for the school.
“Giving Tuesday ends up helping a lot of nonprofits,” Chris Alvarez, associate director of annual giving at the University of Redlands, said. “Using social media, we will reach out to students and alumni. We wanted to make a better effort to try to get more gifts for the University, but also to highlight that this is going on throughout the nation. Especially after everyone is spending so much on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s unique timing for it.”
Giving Tuesday–which is stylized online as #GivingTuesday–began last year, when more than $10 million was raised in all 50 states for thousands of nonprofits. At Redlands this year, the official Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr accounts will be updated with Giving Tuesday messages, special promotions, and ways that everyone can participate.
“My first hope is that the campus community–students, employees, and alumni, everyone who has something to do with this place–takes something from it,” Alvarez said. “I hope they become better educated about philanthropy, and the meaningful impacts of gifts to campus. This could translate to newfound knowledge, leading to some new donors.”
There are more than 100 different Redlands organizations to which donors can make gifts, from the Greeks to athletics to Salzburg. The largest fund, the Redlands Fund, goes to student scholarships.
“The goal of this University is to make education affordable,” Alvarez said. “We really want to help students, and don’t want money to be the reason that a student can’t get a degree.”
All gifts to the University of Redlands count and are appreciated by the students, faculty members, clubs, and departments that receive them.
“We have donors that give to many areas of campus, aside from scholarships–they give money to endowments, which strengthen the institution, or money to departments,” Alvarez said. “As a donor, it is your prerogative to support the area of campus you want to support.”
