Celebration promises a night of surprises
"When Frank Rice ’39 and Bill Hatfield ’74 agreed, as members of the University of Redlands 75th Anniversary Committee in 1982, to organize a Town and Gown Gala, it came as a shock to more timid souls," wrote Larry Burgess in his history of the University's Town & Gown.
"When Shari Oliver ’64 and Carole Beswick determined the campus and many of its buildings should be the site, well my, my, did heads turn. It was a smashing success and still people talk about it. Determined not to let such enthusiasm and potential fade away, core committee members suggested that such good town and gown feelings must be sustained and furthered."
Furthered indeed, 30 years later the Town & Gown organization has not only sustained but continues to grow. Members enjoy opportunities to become involved in volunteer projects, attend events on and off campus, contribute to the Town & Gown Endowed Scholarships, contribute to faculty grants for community service and honor individuals in the community through Awards of Distinction. They stay informed about all Town & Gown has to offer through the monthly e-newsletter.
In this 30th year of Town & Gown, the organization has already hosted its annual tailgate party Rah Rah Redlands, which drew a huge crowd in its new location on the west end of the Ted Runner Stadium, and is looking forward to a full calendar of events to come, most notable among them being the celebration of the milestone year at an anniversary, members-only gala Oct. 26 in the Hall of Letters.
“30 years is a real milestone for Town & Gown as an organization, and this event is all about celebrating that milestone and thanking the members and donors that have made these 30 years possible! Everyone attending should come ready for a really fun night full of surprises!” said President Shelli Stockton.
The dinner event will feature entertainment of song, cheer and history developed by alums Marilyn Magness Carroll ’75 and Steve Carroll ’74, noted musical and event directors for Disney, The Rose Parade, and the Super Bowl. The entertainment will feature well-known talent from the town and from the gown (campus) and organizers say the performance is not to be missed.
General seating is $75 per person and patron seating is $125, which includes preferred seating and program recognition. Cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and show commencing at 6:30 p.m. Complimentary valet parking will be provided at the top of Ad Hill.
