U of R noted for unique living/learning student experience, accessible professors

REDLANDS, CA. (July 19, 2013) – The University of Redlands was recognized for its congenial campus living, flexibility of academic programs, easy access to professors and generous financial aid in this year's edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges. The best-selling college guide also notes one of the University’s most distinctive attributes, "the experimental living/learning college, where students create their own course of study and are judged by self- and professor evaluations rather than grades."

The Fiske Guide, authored by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, is designed to give a selective, subjective and systematic look at 300-plus colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain, and seeks to give readers the real personality of the institutions based on a range of subjects including student body, academics, social life and financial aid.

“What’s particularly helpful about the Fiske listings is that they are based on feedback from students who attend our university and have first-hand knowledge and experience to share,” said Karen Bergh, Director of Public Relations for the University of Redlands.

Fiske Guide picks are based on information provided by administrators and anonymous questionnaires completed by students, according to the introduction to the guide. The first priority is academics, but the guide also looks at campus setting, student body, financial aid, housing, food, social life and extracurricular activities.

“With so many of our state’s larger universities being impacted by hard-to-get classes and huge class sizes, it’s important for students to find schools like ours where they can easily converse with professors and peers, obtain substantial assistance with discounted tuition or financial aid, and find the support and community they are looking for,” Bergh said. “Fiske helps us stand out, on qualitative differences that matter to parents and students.”
