The next generation of singers are learning the ropes by participating in the University of Redlands Youth Choir.

“The mission of the University of Redlands Youth Choir is to provide an environment for young people from surrounding communities to come together and learn important skills under the direction of Redlands faculty,” said Dr. Nicholle Andrews, director of choral activities at the University of Redlands.

Andrews started the choir in January 2013. It is open to children between the ages of five to 16, and consists of two ensembles: the Training Chorus for five to eight-year-olds, and the Youth Choir for nine to 16-year-olds.

“The choirs will rehearse from September to April,” Andrews said. “During rehearsals, the choristers participate in music theory, sight-singing, and ear-training classes, as well as singing in the choirs.”

According to Andrews, activities over the course of the season will help the children gain a number of skills.

“Our Youth Choir program will teach music literacy, self-discipline, teamwork, respect for others, and afford all students the opportunity to learn and grow in a positive, engaging, and safe environment,” she said.

Rehearsals will take place from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Thursdays for the Training Chorus, and 5 to 6 p.m. for the Youth Choir. Performances for the 2013-14 season will be held at 3 p.m. November 17, 2013 and 3 p.m. April 13, 2014, inside the Memorial Chapel.
