About 1,000 musicians arrived in Redlands during the last week of June to participate in the 2013 International Double Reed Society Conference, hosted by the School of Music.
“We had more than 130 events, and it ran really smoothly and by all accounts received rave reviews,” Dr. Andrew Glendening, dean of the School of Music, said, adding it was truly an international event.
“We had people from basically every state in the union, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Italy, Beijing, Brazil, Greece, Portugal, Russia, Australia, Norway, Kazakhstan,” he said. “You name a country, someone from there was here.”
Participants attended workshops, lectures, and concerts during the June 25 to 29 conference. One special concert was the opening of the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival on June 28.
“We want to thank our partners at the Redlands Bowl who worked with us,” Glendening said. “It was remarkable.”
Much of the event’s budget went to paying local musicians to perform throughout the week, which benefited everyone.
“The community was able to attend free concerts, and the musicians were able to play,” Glendening said. “All of the people who came had a good experience in Redlands, and they will share that when they go back home.”
