Many of the new University of Redlands students participated in a poll which revealed some interesting statistics about the Class of 2015.

  • More freshmen indicated they use television and newspapers as their primary source for news this year, as compared to last year. The Class of 2015 also indicated they consult the Internet for their news less than the Class of 2014.
  • With a 160-acre campus, it is still easiest for most students to use "foot power" to get around on campus, as indicated by the 74 percent who said walking was their primary mode of transportation this year. However, a rising number—one in four new students—indicated they brought their bike to campus.
  • In its fifth year on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the University will continue to encourage students in the area of community service. Fifty four percent of the incoming class expressed interest in mentoring opportunities as their top choice for volunteerism. Other areas that interested students included education, animals, local volunteer opportunities, environmental causes, and working with at-risk youth.
  • This year, 100 percent of students have their cell phone with them, compared to 99 percent last year, with an increase in the number who reported not leaving their iPads at home at 5 percent. The Class of 2015 brought fewer laptop/desktop computer and fewer TVs to their residence halls.
  • More than 38 percent brought a stuffed animal with them and 11 percent of those confessed they brought ever-popular Pillow Pets.
  • Not surprisingly, 96 percent said they have a Facebook page, but a noticeable 6 percent more students reported wearing a watch this year than last year. Twitter is not so popular, but a small and dedicated 10 percent said they tweet one to five times a day. With their continued rise in popularity by the demographic, Tumblr and Google+ are being used 18 and 16 percent respectively. The University enjoys a high 80 percent of freshmen who say they have "liked" its official Facebook page.
  • Similar to last year's survey response, slightly more than half of incoming freshmen claimed their parents cried when they said good bye.
