Dr. Pick started his academic career on the faculty of the Graduate Management School at the University of California, Riverside. He joined the business faculty at the University of Redlands in 1991.  He is past chair of the Department of Management and Business and past assembly chair of the School of Business.  In 1997 and 2001, he was visiting professor of systems at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, where he taught courses and conducted studies, and in 2005 he was visiting researcher in School of Social Sciences, University of California, Irvine.

His research concerns management information systems, geographic information systems, urban geography, and population.  He has published ten books and over 100 journal articles, book chapters, and refereed proceedings on these topics.  His recent books concern the giant city growth and development (Mexico Megacity, Westview Press, 1997, co-authored with Edgar Butler); the processes of globalization in the Mexican economy and urban structure in the late 20th century (Mexico and Mexico City in the World Economy, Westview Press, 2001, co-authored with Edgar Butler and James Hettrick); the conceptual frameworks and applications of GIS in business (Geographic Information Systems in Business, Idea Group Publishing, edited book, 2005), modern introduction to urban geography integrating GIS (Exploring the Urban Community: A GIS Approach, Prentice Hall, 2006, co-authored with Richard Greene) and a comprehensive framework and empirical study of GIS and spatial applications in organizations (Geo-Business: GIS in the Digital Organization, John Wiley and Sons, 2007, in press).

He has received research grants from the Ford Foundation, California Urban Environmental Research and Education Center, and the University of California, and is currently co-principal investigator on a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration.  He received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award for Mexico, Thunderbird Award from the Business Association of Latin American Studies, Outstanding College Alumni Award from Northern Illinois University, and teaching and research awards from the University of Redlands.  He serves on four journal editorial boards. He is past president of the Association for Borderlands Studies and of the Orange County Chapter of Association for Systems Management.

In addition to this university work, he has served on several nonprofit boards including the Orange County Art Museum and Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive and the board of professional advisors of the M.A. Program in Demographic and Social Analysis at U.C. Irvine.
