The University of Redlands Debate Society is one of the oldest and most successful extra-curricular organizations on campus. Since its inception, the debate society has consistently performed well at the annual National Debate Tournament, including semi-final appearances in 1977-78 and 1979, second place finishes in 1975, 1982 and 1990 and national titles in 1951-52 and 1991. In fact, only Harvard University, Dartmouth College and Northwestern University have won more national debate titles than Redlands.
The program has historically focused on "policy debate" using the national topic set forth at the National Debate and CEDA tournaments. In addition to the annual national tournaments, the debate team attends several tournaments throughout the year at universities such as Harvard, Northwestern, Baylor, USC and many others.
Who can participate? Any student in good academic standing can join the squad. While many participants have had high school debating experience, it is not a requirement. All research and squad efforts are shared. Many debate alumni have gone on to some of the nation's best graduate and law schools, including Harvard, Georgetown and Stanford universities.
How do I get involved? There are limited talent debate scholarships available for incoming students. Contact the Director of Debate, Bill Southworth (909-748-8721), about the opportunities for involvement in the debate program. |
