New Student Orientation Week at a Glance
New Student Orientation Week is specifically designed for new, first-year and transfer students. From Wednesday, Aug. 28 through Monday, Sept. 2, exciting and engaging programs will provide you with the information needed to facilitate a smooth transition to the University of Redlands.
All orientation programs are mandatory and you should come prepared to engage and participate fully. Although Monday, Sept. 2 is Labor Day, you should plan to remain on campus for the entire week since classes start on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
A balance between academic, social and information programs have been scheduled, especially through the weekend. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about your new surroundings. Remember, you are making a move to a new community and will invest a significant amount of time and money over the next four years. It is essential to spend a few days learning how to get the most out of your investment and learn about all of the resources the University of Redlands has to offer.
Mandatory Orientation Registration
All new students are required to register for New Student Orientation Week. Registration is from 8 a.m. to noon in the Hunsaker University Center lobby. All new students will receive a University of Redlands “welcome bag” filled with important information (e.g., orientation booklet, lanyard, orientation mentor information, and coupons for free items, etc.).
Student ID photos will be taken and your University of Redlands official Student ID card will be given to you. Various vendors will also be on site for students who would like to sign up for their services (e.g., cable, banking, etc.). Public Safety will also be present to issue parking permits or a bicycle registration sticker to those students who register their car and/or bike. Once you complete orientation registration, you can proceed to your residence hall and begin to move in if you are living on campus.
Mandatory Forms and Online Check-In
In early June, you received your “user ID and password.” You should go to my.Redlands.edu and log on to verify your status and monitor your progress on clearing the mandatory forms. Remember to frequently check your University email and your my.Redlands account to see which outstanding items (e.g., bill, immunizations, loan documents, etc.) still need to be completed. As of Aug. 20, new students could access the “online check-in” site, which informs the University a student is attending. You must complete the online check-in process by Sept. 6.
First Year Seminar Class
The opportunity to start one of your most important classes prior to the start of school happens during Orientation Week. The First Year Seminar (FYS) class allows you the chance to become acclimated slowly, with the help of one professor, to the academic environment, other faculty, and administrative support. Your FYS professor also serves as your academic advisor and will assist you with class registration during New Student Orientation Week.
Parents and New Student Orientation Week
Parents are invited to attend the first two days of New Student Orientation Week. A parent orientation schedule will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 28, in the lobby of the Irvine Commons. The schedule will outline various parent programs designed specifically for parents of new students. On Thursday, Aug. 29, parents are invited to stay for lunch and dinner, at no cost. Dinner is served on the Quad and is an opportunity to engage with their student’s First Year Seminar class, student peer advisor, and FYS professor.
