Alumni & Friends

Dear U of R Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

For nearly eight months in 2008, I had the pleasure of serving as the interim director of Alumni Relations.  When my stint ended, it never occurred to me that one day I would return to the Alumni House as the full-time director.  I am deeply honored to have been given this appointment, one that presents many challenges but also many opportunities to reach out to alumni in fresh and exciting ways.

Yet, sitting here gazing north across campus to the San Bernardino Mountains and the “R” inscribed there so long ago, the timeless adage that, “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” rings truer than ever.  Though the face of campus has changed greatly in the last 20 years, though fields of study have evolved over the years, though faculty teach and students learn in ways unimaginable not so long ago, the fundamental mission of the university and its “Hello” spirit abide.  Though ever-changing, the university remains familiar and welcoming.

Thank you for your loyalty and support.  I look forward to seeing you here on campus soon or at one of the many off-campus events we have scheduled.

Why He’s a Bulldog for Life

Steven Rodriguez ’98, ’06 says his biggest adventure was leaving life as a “desert rat” in La Quinta, Calif. to become a student at the University of Redlands.
“I was the first and only one in my impoverished family to get into college,” he wrote recently in an e-mail message.
“I remember packing everything in my 18-year-old life into a swamp green duffel bag and heading to Redlands.”
Rodriguez earned a bachelor of arts degree in music and master’s degree from the School of Education. Now as the choral director at Rialto High School, where he’s taught for 12 years, Rodriguez shares his stories of his time at the university with his students.
