Current Research

Teaching the History of Jazz and History of Rock Music, I am constantly researching information in the form of scholarly books, newspaper articles and internet resources to keep my courses updated and my knowledge growing. I also am continuing my pedagogical studies in contemporary guitar styles including jazz, rock, blues, funk and reggae.

Biography

Dr. Paul R. Murphy earned his Doctor of Music Arts degree in Jazz Studies from USC in 2002, completed his Master’s degree in Studio/Jazz Guitar from USC in 1999 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging from the Berklee College of Music in 1986. Dr. Murphy has been a professional musician in Los Angeles for twenty years since moving from New York in 1989. He’s recorded as the guitarist on The Muppets Show Tonight, on Film Scores, Commercials, on several CD’s and has performed in Musical Theatre Pit Orchestras. He has toured the United States and Japan and has performed in concerts, recitals, nightclubs and other venues throughout Southern California.
