The Major in Performance
The Major in Performance
The BM in performance is a four-year program consisting of course work in the major (individual instruction, performance class, major conducted ensemble, chamber music), core music studies (theory, aural skills, music history, conducting) and a minimum of 30 credits outside the School of Music that will provide a broad education in the spirit of the Liberal Arts Foundation. A junior and senior recital is required. The performance major is available in voice, piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, double bass, classical guitar, jazz/studio guitar, harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.
Piano or Organ
Basic Music Courses (all majors) plus:
- MUAP 302 or MUAP 305 Private Instruction in the Major Instrument— 24 credits
- MUAP 304 and/or MUAP 306 Private Instruction—2 credits
- MUS 211 Accompanying—8 credits
- MUS 217 Piano Literature (Piano majors)
- MUS 157 Organ History and Literature (Organ majors)
- MUS 228 Pedagogy
- MUS 229 Pedagogy Practicum
- MUS 299 * Upper Division Qualifying Examination
- MUS 399 Junior Recital (or production of a professional-level edited tape recording)
- MUS 498A Full Senior Recital
- Appropriate conducted ensemble— 4 credits
Voice
Basic Music Courses (all majors) plus:

- MUS 224 German and Italian Vocal Literature and Diction
- MUSI 110 Opera Workshop—4 credits

- MUS 225 English and French Vocal Literature and Diction

Violin majors must also complete 2 credits of private study in viola.
Viola majors must also complete 2 credits of private study in violin.
Wind Instrument or Percussion
Basic Music Courses (all majors) plus:
- MUAP 300–399 Private Instruction on the Major Instrument—24 credits
Note: Percussion majors must take a minimum of 8 credits of MUAP 322 Classical Percussion and a minimum of 8 credits of MUAP 324 Jazz Percussion.
