University of Redlands Madrigal Singers
The University of Redlands Madrigal Singers was created in 1992 under the direction of Mr. Jeffrey Rickard. Originally a women’s choir, Madrigal Singers began as the result of the large number of women enrolled in the choral program, combined with the need for an ensemble to perform secular choral works. Past directors of the Women’s Madrigal Singers have been Mr. Jeffrey Rickard, Dr. Katherine Hickey and Dr. Eniko St. Clair. Rickard returned as director of Madrigal Singers in 2004 when they became an SATB chamber ensemble. In 2006 Dr. Nicholle Andrews became the director of the 23-voice chamber choir which performed both sacred and secular choral works. The Madrigal Singers are regular performers in the annual Feast of Lights at the University of Redlands.
Under the direction of Dr. Nicholle Andrews, the Madrigal Singers were brought to national and international attention. In March of 2008, the choir was invited to perform at the California Music Educators Conference in Sacramento. After a wonderful concert, they were invited to return to perform at the conference the following year in Ontario, CA.
Madrigal Singers were invited to perform at Festival 500, Sharing the Voices in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada July 2-12, 2009. From over 150 auditioned choirs, Madrigal Singers was one of 30 choirs who attended and performed at this wonderful festival. This heralded festival and the accompanying academic symposium on the phenomenon of singing, brings together singers, conductors and scholars from countries and cultures worldwide.
