Description of Research
Dr. Cass’s research centers on the philosophical foundations of information systems and the information processes involved with the embodiment of expertise. She has examined ways that information systems can support experts during the process of articulating knowledge and novices during the process of acquiring expertise.
Her current research includes information conveyance along with the effect communication of explicit knowledge has on the ability to reproduce implicit knowledge-based behaviors. Since novices have little experiential framework in which to place the ideas, concepts, questions and criticisms they receive in the process of embodying knowledge, it is questionable whether experts can transmit their embodied or tacit knowledge. Dr. Cass has investigated the role that informational context and experiential background have on the process that novices undergo in attempting to embody expertise throughout time.
