Accounting Certificate

The Accounting Certificate fulfills one of the major requirements for students who want to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination.  This Certificate also will provide you with a solid accounting foundation for earning other credentials, such as Certified Management Accountant (CA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

Required courses include:

Principles of Financial Accounting and Reporting (4 units)

In this course you will explore financial accounting and reporting concepts and the procedures used in daily business operations.  You will study the use of economic resources, as well as obligations and activities of financial entities, and you will learn how to use financial information to analyze health and performance of an enterprise.

Principles of Managerial Accounting (4 units)

This course provides you with an overview of the financial and non financial information used in planning, directing, motivating and evaluating.  You will learn how to apply concepts, terms and techniques from financial accounting, economics and behavioral sciences to various operating situations in support of decision-making and alignment of goals. Prerequisite: Principles of Financial Accounting and Reporting or equivalent.

Intermediate Accounting I (4 units)

This course will provide you with an intensive study of the financial accounting environment and a review of the authoritative accounting literature that provides a guide to the recording of economic resources and obligations and the related economic activities of business enterprises.  Prerequisite: Principles of Managerial Accounting or equivalent.

Intermediate Accounting II (4 units)

This course will provide you with an intensive study of the financial accounting environment and a review of the authoritative accounting literature that provides a guide to the recording of economic resources and obligations and the related economic activities of business enterprises.  Prerequisite: Intermediate Accounting I or equivalent.

Auditing Principles and Practice (4 units)

In this course you will examine the purposes, expectations and responsibilities of independent public auditor, with an emphasis on the auditor's decision-making process.  Topics include legal liability, ethics, sampling theory, evidence, audit standards, internal controls and the audit report.  Prerequisite: Intermediate Accounting I or equivalent.

Tax Accounting (4 units)

You will learn how to calculate federal and state income tax liability for individuals, corporations and partnerships, as well as how to file returns, pay taxes and claim refunds.  You will also review legislative and judicial developments in tax law and the legal recourse available to taxpayers.  Prerequisite: Principles of Financial Accounting and Reporting or equivalent.

Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting (2 units)

In this course you will learn accounting principles and practices related to state and local government agencies and not for profit entities including hospitals, colleges, religious groups and social services organizations.  Topics include: fund accounting, basic financial analysis and statements, tax liabilities, budget and planning, and regulatory reporting requirements.  Prerequisites: Principles of Financial Accounting and Reporting or equivalent.
