Research and Professional Background

I have published a number of articles, in French and English, on questions of narrative theory. I have also written on narrative form in science fiction. I have one book of literary theory, Perceiving and Telling, and have co-edited two volumes of essays from international conferences. I am translator and co-author of two translations/critical editions for Wesleyan University Press, one of Balzac’s Le Centenaire, the other of three novellas of the Belgian writer J-H Rosny. I have co-authored a web exhibit on the urban landscape of Paris in Balzac’s time (1800-1850) www.balzacsparis.ucr.edu. My most recent article is on Jules Verne, scientist Claude Bernard and the creation of scientific sense of wonder. I am currently working on a book on science and fiction in 19th century French fiction. I make a point of returning to France for several months each summer, not only to see my family, but to keep abreast of French cultural and social issues, which is very important for my teaching.

BOOK IN PROGRESS

Tentatively entitled “Cartesian Mediations: Science and Fiction in Nineteenth-Century France.” The study deals with the increasing impact of materialist science on the Cartesian paradigm (the mind-matter duality and, especially, the mind-body problem) which defines French culture and the French novel. Specifically, it discusses works by Balzac, Flaubert, Verne, Zola, Maupassant and Proust.
