Dear members of the U of R community,
Since graduating in 2005 with a degree in Economics and Government, I have continued on an academic path. I received a Master’s Degree in Political Science from Villanova University, and just recently I advanced to doctoral candidacy in the Department of Government at Cornell University. This promises to be an exciting year! For my dissertation, I will be conducting fieldwork and collecting data in Russia, Kazakhstan and China. My work focuses on the politics of international finance in emerging markets with non-democratic political systems. The “BIG” question driving my research asks whether globalization and political authoritarianism can be reconciled in places like China, Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and many others.
My time at the University of Redlands and my experience in the Economics Department gave me a solid foundation to become both a serious scholar and a good teacher. Professors at Redlands were examples of exactly the kind of scholar I would like to become: dedicated equally to their profession and their students. At Redlands, I felt all the encouragement that only a small community can provide, along with serious academic demands that challenged me to be the best student I could be.
Since leaving Redlands, I remained in touch with several professors who continued to guide me even after their formal obligations to me as a student had expired. I continue to look back with fond memories of my time at Redlands, and I look forward to staying in touch for many years to come!
