Description of Research and Professional Background Highlights

Dr. Mitchell has been the Director of the Accounting Program at University of Redlands since 2004. She started her career at one of the Big-Four accounting firms, and on the staff of the Enforcement Division and Office of the Chief Accountant at the Securities and Exchange Commission. After she earned her Ph.D. at Columbia, she has taught at several outstanding educational institutions throughout Southern California.

Laurie is particularly interested in the topic of financial literacy, and she has written cases and taught a large number of seminars on the topic since 2004. She has been on the Board of Directors of California Jump$tart, a leading nonprofit in the area. Since 2009, she has been on the Board of Directors of the American Funds Fixed Income Group, one of the world’s largest families of mutual funds.

In her spare time, Laurie enjoys painting with watercolors, renovating her home and playing sports, including competitive croquet. She and her husband Chris live in San Marino with their two children and two dogs.
