Mortar Board Events

Mortar Board members are involved in a number of on and off campus events that take place throughout the year. The activities range from fundraising to community service, and also include some traditional annual events such as the Professor of the Year Award. Members of the Mortar Board are responsible for organizing and carrying out these events smoothly.

Professor of the Year

The Professor of the Year committee works hard to facilitate two of the W.E.B.S. chapter's largest projects, the Professor of the Year events. After collecting student nominations, the committee hosts a wine and cheese reception in honor of the top five nominees.

All members of the committee contribute to the success of the event by making reservations, designing programs, sending invitations, purchasing wine, ordering flowers, obtaining musicians, and speaking about the nominees at the event. After the Professor of the Year winner is announced, committee members helped prepare for the High Table Dinner in honor of the receiving professor.

Members stay busy preparing awards, programs, and flowers, and orchestrating speakers for the event. Mortar Board members also contribute by photographing the event and providing information to the press. Both events are very successful and the professors greatly appreciate their awards.

Finals Baskets

The Finals Baskets are the main fundraiser organized by the Mortar Board. Finals Baskets are a great way to remind students that their parents are thinking of them during the stressful times at the end of each semester.

Mortar Board Finals Baskets are an ideal way to brighten a student's day during this hectic period, while treating them with a little "study energy." The baskets are filled with lots of goodies such as: fruit, water, juice, hot cocoa, Easy Mac macaroni and cheese, popcorn, breakfast bars, oatmeal, applesauce, crackers, and chocolate. Each basket also includes a University of Redlands stadium cup.

The baskets are hand-delivered to each student on Study Day, to ensure that they will have energy to push through their tough finals!

Community Service

This year our members have been very active in many different community service ventures. Our first major project was helping Anderson Hall here on campus put on their annual Halloween Festival. Mortar Board members created a booth that had an activity and rewarded candy to visiting children along with a book to promote literacy.

We have also completed over 60 hours of tutoring for the A.K. Smiley library where Mortar Board members help local children with their homework and reading. Another organization we have contributed many hours to is Redlands Family Services where we help keep donations organized and give food and clothes to people who are in need.

We also lent our time to the Mission of San Bernardino on the Saturday before Thanksgiving bringing food to qualified families to aid in their thanksgiving meals and better their holiday season. We have helped the Ronald McDonald House with their can lid drive and also a member of ours has spent over 12 hours helping at their facilities.

Several of our members have been involved in "walks" such as the LA AIDS walk. We are also beginning to spend time at YAPS, a humane society where our members make sure that the animals receive some much needed affection. We have put in time at other various events and organizations and continue to do so with enthusiasm and heart. Many members exceed the number of hours required and we all feel very connected to the service that we complete.
