Mathematics
The mathematics program at Redlands provides students with a thorough grounding in the ideas and techniques of mathematics, together with the opportunity to apply these concepts to interesting and abstract mathematical problems and to problems in a wide variety of other disciplines ranging from the sciences to the humanities. This program emphasizes mathematical thinking and problem-solving, and both written and oral communication of mathematics.
A major in mathematics leads to a bachelor of science degree. The major consists of a number of core courses as well as a number of elective courses which students may choose from pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics, or courses aimed at preparing for a career in middle school or high school mathematics teaching. Mathematics minors have similar flexibility in choosing electives from pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics.
Computer Science
The computer science major leads to a bachelor of science degree and is designed to prepare students both for graduate studies and for a variety of professional careers in the computer field.
It combines the teaching of particular computer skills (programming, problem solving, programming languages, networking, operating systems and tools) along with the conceptual underpinnings of computer science (theory of computation, operating systems, programming languages and software engineering).
It is not enough in this program to learn about computers and programming. Students must define problems, design, implement and test their solutions. Students get practical experience in the classroom and complete an independent senior senior project.
