The Fantasticks
The world’s longest running musical is coming to the university’s new Frederick Loewe Black Box Theatre later this month.
The 1960 musical “The Fantasticks” will be performed Thursday, March 11 through Saturday, March 13 at 8 p.m. nightly, as well as Sunday, March 14 at 2 p.m. Performances will continue Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 21 at 2 p.m.
Tickets, which can be purchased in advance, are $10 for the general public and $6 for students, staff and seniors.
The production is directed by professor Chris Beach, with set design by professor Nephelie Andonyadis and costume design by Haley Keim.
The musical tells the story of two fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love. The decision is based on reverse psychology – the idea that children will do what their parents say they shouldn’t. As the play continues, the children do fall in love, but when they find out their fathers’ ploy, they decide to go their own ways and explore the world.
The show’s original off-Broadway production ran for 42 years, making it the world’s longest running musical. It received a Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre award in 1991.
The production has a minimalist feel that is particularly well suited to the intimate setting of the new Frederick Loewe Black Box Theatre.
