Description:

Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Communications, the Director of Public Relations serves as the primary media and public relations contact for the university, serving the college, all professional schools and a wide variety of departmental needs.  The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Clearly articulates, and markets the University of Redlands brand and differentiation through the development of a set of university-wide and departmental/school-specific key messages, press materials, media outreach, and copywriting that supports the university’s publications and online vehicles, such as e-newsletters and the Web site.
  • Develops the annual PR/media relations plans that support the University’s mission and objectives.
  • Develops and oversees the University’s media relations policies and procedures.
  • Serves as the University spokesperson on media relations contact for incoming inquiries and external media outreach.
  • Prepares on-campus spokespersons as needed and prepares external interview sources for interviews.
  • Works directly with the President on his communication messages both internally and externally.
  • Develops and oversees the University’s editorial calendar and academic excellence/award editorial opportunities.
  • Develops and spearheads the University’s crisis communication planning and execution.
  • Works with college, the various schools and departments, identifies what is newsworthy and works with the marketing department staff to develop crisp, clean press materials for the purpose of securing ongoing positive local, regional and national story placement about the University and its unique programs.
  • Develops original copy and/or edits copy of others for the Web site, online internal and alumni newsletters, alumni magazines, flyers, enrollment brochures, posters and other collateral.
  • Stays current with public relations, media relations and social media trends, issues and opportunities, serves as a valued-added resource to the Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Communications and University staff to understand and navigate the changing marketing landscape.
  • Performs other related duties or special projects as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Position requires Bachelor's Degree, plus six (6) to eight (8) years public media relations and an understanding of both new and traditional media. A degree in English, communications, journalism or public relations is preferred. Experience as an external spokesperson is a plus, as is integrated marketing experience. Successful candidate will have solid PR/media/journalistic writing and editing skills; executive communications/speechwriting experience with a portfolio of work samples. A collaborative and dynamic strategist, the successful candidate will be an effective leader and manager with an inclusive, team-oriented management style.
