August 28, 2008 -

In came the papasan chairs, the file cabinets, the piles of pillows—and the Class of 2012.

New students, including many accompanied by family members, arrived on campus Aug. 26 for orientation. Classes are set to start Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The university community will welcome about 680 new members this fall, when freshman and transfer students arrive on campus for a week of orientation activities and the start of fall classes.

About 85 percent of the students are freshmen, while 99 students are classified as transfer students.

The admissions process for new students was an extensive one. There were a total of 3,761 applicants, representing a 24 percent increase in applications since the fall of 2004, according to the admissions office.

About 62 percent of the new students are from California, while 38 percent are from out of state. The largest states represented in descending order are Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts, Hawaii and Texas.  Students also hail from Austria, Brazil, Paraguay, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

The new class has a high school grade-point-average of 3.5. About 34 percent of entering freshmen were recognized with academic honors during the admissions process.

New students are enthusiastic about a wide variety of interests. Some of the most common academic interests included business, psychology, music, pre-med, biology, history, environmental science and international relations. About 18 percent were undecided about their majors at the time of admission, and university officials say that many students will change their major two or three times during college. About eight percent of students planned to pursue a Johnston emphasis.

New students could participate in an array of orientation activities designed to help them get to know their classmates, professors and the culture of the university.

A variety of engaging, innovative first-year seminars are being offered for the freshman, including It's Your Choice: The Performance Lifestyle, Thirsty Blue Planet, How to Predict an Election: Understanding the 2008 Campaign, and Moral Imagination: The Art and Soul of Speaking Truth to Power.
