Reza Aslan to Speak
Dr. Reza Aslan, author of the New York Times bestseller “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth” and a scholar of religions, will speak at the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Aslan, an associate professor of creative writing at the University of California, Riverside, is the founder of AslanMedia.com, an online journal for news and entertainment about the Middle East and the world, and co-founder and chief creative officer of BoomGen Studios, an entertainment brand for creative content from and about the greater Middle East. Aslan has appeared on numerous television programs, but a clip of him promoting “Zealot” on Fox News earlier this summer, in which he was asked how he as a Muslim could write about Jesus, became an Internet sensation.
“We had asked Reza Aslan to come speak as a part of our Muslim Journeys series, well before his interview with Fox News went viral,” Leela MadhavaRau, associate dean for Campus Diversity and Inclusion, said. “However, that interview allowed many more people to understand why we would invite such an articulate scholar to speak on Islam, the Middle East and Islamophobia.”
During his lecture, Aslan will address the topics of Islam, the Middle East, and Muslim Americans with wit, optimism, and authority.
“We encourage the community to participate in this event, knowing that Reza’s presence will spark increased dialogue and critical thinking amongst those in attendance,” MadhavaRau said.
This event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow, and Aslan’s works will be available for purchase on site.
